U1 tip to ANS (linear)

Definition

The distance from the upper incisal tip to the anterior nasal spine — a vertical read of upper-incisor height (anterior upper dental height).

How

Measure the straight-line distance U1T→ANS in mm.

Purpose

Grades vertical development of the anterior maxillary dentoalveolus: over-erupted upper incisors (gummy smile, deep bite) read long; under-erupted (reduced display, open-bite tendency) read short.

High

Above the norm reads as excess anterior dental height — over-erupted upper incisors / gummy-smile tendency.

Low

Below the norm reads as deficient anterior dental height — reduced incisor display, open-bite tendency.

This is a reviewed tracing on one real cephalogram — the same ceph on every page in Learn — so U1 tip to ANS (linear) here is a real reading and not a diagram.
