SN to occlusal plane

Definition

The inclination of the occlusal plane to the anterior cranial base (S–N).

How

Draw S–N and the occlusal plane (incisal overlap point → OP); measure the angle (norm ≈ 14°).

Purpose

Steiner's occlusal-cant read: how the functional plane is rotated within the face. It shifts with vertical growth and with mechanics (molar intrusion/extrusion), so it doubles as a treatment-effect monitor.

High

Above the norm reads as a steep occlusal plane relative to the cranial base (vertical pattern / Class II mechanics signature).

Low

Below the norm reads as a flat occlusal plane (horizontal pattern).

This is a reviewed tracing on one real cephalogram — the same ceph on every page in Learn — so SN to occlusal plane here is a real reading and not a diagram.
