Cant of the occlusal plane

Definition

The tilt of the occlusal plane relative to the Frankfort horizontal.

How

Draw the occlusal plane (incisal overlap point → posterior occlusal contact OP) and Frankfort (Po–Or); measure the angle between them (norm ≈ 9°, occlusal plane dropping posteriorly).

Purpose

A steep occlusal plane accompanies vertical growth patterns and Class II mechanics (and is what many functional/clear-aligner strategies try to flatten); a flat plane goes with deep-bite, horizontal patterns.

High

Above the norm reads as a steep occlusal cant — vertical pattern; bite tends open anteriorly.

Low

Below the norm reads as a flat occlusal plane — horizontal, deep-bite pattern.

This is a reviewed tracing on one real cephalogram — the same ceph on every page in Learn — so Cant of the occlusal plane here is a real reading and not a diagram.
