Unit 6 of 7

The profile

Six points on skin, and the face the patient actually sees.

The card

Nobody comes to an orthodontist about their ANB. The soft-tissue points are the hardest on the ceph — a thin edge against air, moving with every swallow — and they are the ones the treatment is judged on.

  • The lips must be at rest. A ceph taken with the lips strained together is a different profile.
  • Soft-tissue nasion and pogonion are not their bony namesakes; the tissue over the chin runs from two millimeters to twelve.
  • The E-line runs from the nose tip to soft pogonion, and both lips are measured against it.
  • The nasolabial angle turns on subnasale, which is a corner rather than a curve.
