Unit 1 of 7
The cranial base
Two points, and the line that everything else is measured against.
The card
Every angle in a cephalometric analysis is an angle to something, and the something is nearly always the anterior cranial base. Get these two right and the rest of the face has a frame.
- Sella is the middle of the pituitary fossa — the center of an enclosed space, not a point on its outline.
- Nasion is the frontonasal suture, on the bone, not on the skin over it.
- The line between them is S–N. Steiner measured the whole face against it because it is the most reproducible line on a lateral ceph.
